A Practical Guide to Apparel Tech Packs for Brands

A factory can make a clean first sample from a strong design concept. It cannot reliably reproduce that result across multiple sizes, wash lots, and bulk production runs without complete instructions. This guide to apparel tech packs explains how brands can turn a creative direction into a production document that protects fit, quality, cost, and delivery timelines.

For denim, the gap between an attractive sketch and a manufacturable product is especially wide. A jean may involve multiple panels, pocket placements, rivets, zipper details, decorative stitching, wash effects, trims, and strict measurement tolerances. When any of those details are left open to interpretation, sample revisions increase and the risk of inconsistency in bulk production rises.

What a Guide to Apparel Tech Packs Should Cover

An apparel tech pack is the technical specification package a brand sends to its manufacturer. It gives the development, pattern, sourcing, sampling, and quality teams one approved source of truth. The document should tell the factory what to make, what materials to use, how the garment should fit, and which details are not open for substitution.

A tech pack is not simply a fashion sketch with measurements added. It should connect the product design to the decisions required on the production floor. A designer may specify a vintage mid-blue jean with a relaxed fit. A usable tech pack defines the fabric construction and weight, wash reference, rise, leg shape, stitch color, hardware finish, label placement, grading rules, and acceptable measurement variation.

The level of detail depends on the product and the stage of development. An early concept package can support a feasibility discussion and initial costing. Before bulk production, however, the file should be complete enough that the approved sample can be reproduced without relying on memory, chat messages, or assumptions.

Start With a Clear Product Overview

The first page should identify the product clearly. Include the brand name, season, style name, style number, revision date, intended gender or fit category, target size range, and a clear front and back flat sketch. Revision control matters. If the factory receives several versions of the same file, everyone needs to know which version is valid.

Use callouts on the flats to identify construction details. For a denim jacket, this may include the collar shape, chest pocket dimensions, yoke seam, button locations, waistband construction, cuff opening, and hem finish. For jeans, call out the front fly, pocket bag, coin pocket, back yoke, back-pocket artwork, inseam, outseam, and bottom opening.

Photos of competitive products or inspiration references can help communicate a direction, particularly for washes and styling. They should not replace written specifications. A reference image may show a faded knee or destroyed hem, but the factory still needs to know the intended wash level, placement, abrasion method, and whether the effect must remain consistent from piece to piece.

Build a Measurement Specification That Controls Fit

The measurement specification, often called a point of measure sheet, is one of the most important sections of the tech pack. It defines how the garment is measured and what dimensions are acceptable in the sample and bulk order.

Every point of measure should have a description, a measurement method, a base-size value, and a tolerance. For example, a denim jean specification may include waist circumference, high hip, low hip, front rise, back rise, thigh, knee, leg opening, inseam, and outseam. A note such as measure waistband straight across, then double is more useful than a number alone.

Do not use fit language as a substitute for measurements. Terms such as oversized, slim, relaxed, cropped, and high-rise are useful commercial descriptors, but different teams may interpret them differently. A relaxed straight jean and a loose straight jean can have very different thigh, knee, and hem measurements.

Grading should also be addressed early. If the brand has established grade rules, include them for each point of measure. If not, ask the manufacturer or pattern team to propose grading after the base size has been approved. This is a practical trade-off for newer brands: developing custom grade rules creates more control, while using proven category-based grading can reduce development time. Either approach requires approval before size-set sampling or bulk cutting.

Specify Fabric, Trims, and Color Without Ambiguity

Material information should allow the sourcing team to quote the right components and the quality team to inspect them. For denim, identify the fiber content, construction, fabric weight, stretch level, finish, target color, and any performance requirements. A request for 12-ounce stretch denim is not enough if stretch recovery, fabric handfeel, and shrinkage expectations matter to the product.

When exact source materials are required, provide the supplier name, article number, color code, and approved swatch reference. When the manufacturer may source an equivalent material, state the performance and appearance standard that the substitute must meet. This gives flexibility during sourcing without changing the intended product.

The bill of materials should list every component used in the garment. It typically includes shell fabric, pocketing, interfacing, sewing thread, zipper, buttons, rivets, leather or paper patch, woven labels, care labels, hangtags, and packaging. For each item, include the color, size, placement, supplier information when applicable, and whether approval is required before purchase.

Hardware deserves close attention in denim programs. A button marked antique brass can vary significantly in tone, logo depth, plating durability, and size. Specify the finish with a physical sample or clear visual reference, and state whether branded hardware is required. The same discipline applies to thread. Contrast stitching, tonal stitching, and multi-color decorative stitching should be identified by seam location, not only by a general thread color note.

Translate Construction Details Into Factory Instructions

Construction pages explain how the garment is assembled. This is where technical clarity prevents quality disputes later. Include seam types, stitch types, stitch density where relevant, seam allowances, reinforcement points, bartack locations, edge finishes, and topstitch widths.

For example, a back pocket specification should state the pocket dimensions, corner shape, placement from the center back and yoke seam, decorative stitch artwork, thread colors, and required bartacks. If the pocket must align with a printed or embroidered detail, call that out specifically. A factory cannot reliably control placement from a general instruction such as place as shown.

Use enlarged detail drawings for complicated areas. Fly construction, waistband interiors, placket finishing, lined pockets, removable components, and engineered panels often need more detail than a standard flat sketch can provide. A simple construction note can also prevent an expensive assumption, such as whether raw edges are intended to fray or must be secured with an overlock stitch.

Treat Denim Washes as Technical Specifications

A wash reference is not a final wash instruction. Denim washes can shift based on fabric lot, dye behavior, garment construction, enzyme formulas, laser settings, sanding pressure, and finishing processes. The tech pack should include the target wash appearance, but the approved wash standard should be confirmed through development samples.

Describe the wash by both overall result and location-specific effects. State the target shade, cast, contrast level, whisker placement, honeycomb intensity, abrasion areas, grinding, distressing, patch repairs, coating, tint, and handfeel. If each garment should look individual, define the acceptable variation. If uniformity is required for a retail program, identify the areas that must remain controlled.

Brands should also consider the commercial implications of wash complexity. Heavy destruction, hand sanding, multi-step overdyeing, and special coatings can create a distinctive product, but they affect cost, lead time, yield, and consistency. The right choice depends on the intended price point, order volume, and how much variation the customer will accept.

Record Packaging, Testing, and Quality Requirements

A complete tech pack should not stop at the garment itself. Include folding instructions, polybag requirements, carton packing ratio, barcode placement, hangtag attachment method, and any retailer-specific labeling requirements. These details are often simple, but errors at the packing stage can delay shipment or create chargebacks.

Quality requirements should be specific enough to inspect. Define acceptable measurement tolerances, shade variation standards, fabric defects, stitch issues, loose-thread limits, damage thresholds, and wash-related expectations. If testing is required, state the relevant requirements for colorfastness, shrinkage, seam strength, restricted substances, or other market-specific standards.

Manage Revisions Through Sampling

Even a detailed tech pack develops through sampling. The first sample tests pattern interpretation, construction, material availability, and wash direction. Comments should be consolidated in one revision document rather than sent as scattered messages from multiple stakeholders.

Each round should identify what changed and why. Mark approved items clearly, list corrections by page or measurement point, and issue a new revision date. Avoid changing fit, fabric, hardware, and wash direction at the same time unless the product is still at an exploratory stage. Focused revisions make it easier to identify the source of a problem and keep the sample calendar on track.
